Abigail
Abigail
Abigail Who was Abigail? She was the wife of a rich and mean man named Nabal. But Abigail was sensible and humble, and very beautiful both physically and spiritually. - 1 Samuel 25: 3. What did she do? Acting with wisdom and discernment, Abigail prevented a tragedy from happening. She and Nabal lived in the region where David was hiding as a fugitive before becoming king of Israel. David and his men protected Nabal's flocks while they were there. But when David's messengers went to ask Nabal for food, Nabal refused to help. David was furious! He and his men were determined to kill Nabal and all the men in his home. - 1 Samuel 25: 10-12, 22. When she heard what her husband had done, Abigail acted quickly. She asked her servants to bring food to David and his men and then went to David to beg for mercy. (1 Samuel 25: 14-19, 24-31) David saw what Abigail had sent, realized his humility and listened to his wise advice; so he recognized that God was using Abigail to avoid a tragedy. (1 Samuel 25:32, 33) Soon after that, Nabal died and David married Abigail. - 1 Samuel 25: 37-41. What can we learn from Abigail? Although Abigail was rich and beautiful, she had a balanced view of herself. To keep the peace, she was willing to apologize for something that was not her fault. She resolved a tense situation with calm, tact, courage and wisdom. Antonio s. Sousa.
